Day 10 - Leon
Our day in Leon began with a large buffet in the hotel. The coffee was terrible! Then we were off to the office de turismo for the procedure for taking the bus to La Virgen del Camino. The book leads you to believe it is a village but it is actually a Church in the burbs at the edge of town. With that done, we were off to see the "Holy Grail". We know of this because it was in the news in the US before we left. It is on display in the Museo of the Pantheon de San Isadoro. The museo in general was very interesting, but the grail was the jewel of the museo. It had it's own room with many cameras and a sealed case. It is an alabaster cup adorned with much gold. A base was added to convert it to a chalice. The theory of the adornment was to conceal it . There is no doubt that it is beautiful, but who knows if it is the real thing.
On our tour of the town we visited all of the major plazas and shopping areas. Many locals were out but the off and on rain caused them to gather in the coffee shops.
The peregrino menu was getting tiresome, so we found a great pizza place for our evening meal. Our hotel had a great coffee and tea bar next door, and we finished our evening there.
Earlier in the day, we decided to upgrade a couple pieces of gear. We found a local mountaineering shop nearby and bought 2 new base layers for the mountains. Roberto, the owner was great with weather forecasts and help choosing the correct items. I gave him a Wigwam socks sticker for his counter.
While sitting in the Plaza Mayor, sipping a beer at the local Irish Pub, we met two pilgrims from Colorado Springs and two from San Antonio, TX.
The Lady who was separated from her husband was in the sporting shop with her husband and she informed us that they met up at the Leon Cathedral and all was good now but she was still ill with food poisoning.
I think we must have walked at least 5-6 miles touring around town.
Buen Camino
