A Night in Burgos
Sunday, May 18, 2014
We left Madrid Aeroperto on the Metro to the Chamartin Train Station. A short wait in the terninal afforded us a chance to test our Spanish, miserably, and get a snack before heading for our Camino starting point, Burgos.
After a pack explosion and showers, we were off to some exploring before dinner. We strolled along the Calle San Juan in our best peregrino (pilgrim) style to Plaza de Santa Maria and the Cathedral de Santa Maria. Mass was ending when we arrived, but were able to enjoy the end of it and see the incredible mostly gold wall behind the altar . Amazingly beautiful.
In the Plaza San Fernando, everyone was out for the evening; hipsters, touri and pilgrims like us, locals, young and old. Most were dressed for the occasion; even a party with children dressed in white for there first Communion.
We had a beer and a snack before going to dinner. The time was almost 930pm.
On the way to the Cathedral, we noticed a pilgrims menu at a resturant and decided to sample the fare. For 20E we had 2, 3 course meals, a full bottle of wine and dessert. Annie received her first pilgrim stamp in her Credencial del Peregrino; el stupido left his in el hotel!
We managed to finish all but the wine and are finishing it now while writing. Well, I am finishing the wine and writing while Annie is sawing logs!
Tomorrow we will try do the Burgos top 10. We offically start walking the Camino de Santiago Tuesday.
Bon Camino
